Winter Solstice, The Great Conjunction & Age of Aquarius

21. December 2020

Happy Winter Solstice and Great Conjunction!

This morning at 5:02 am EST we experienced the Winter Solstice, the day the night owns the sky, the longest night of the year. This is the transition from mutable Sagittarius to cardinal Capricorn marked by the celebration of Yule and Midwinter. This is the time we invite the light, Father Sky, to return, and initiate the creative cycle of the sun, represented within our own solar nature, as we enter the waxing phase of the sun cycle.

From this day forward, we will experience a little more light than the day before it, until it springs forth from the ground in the next cardinal and seasonal turning point of the spring equinox at Ostara through Aries.

The Winter Solstice is the marking point of introspection, descent into the void of darkness, symbolic of oneself. It is the phase of the crone where true wisdom can be discovered, inherent in the ending of one cycle through death before renewal and birth begins. In the void, death and birth are simultaneously present. Light begins again in the dark, in the womb.

The Great Conjunction of Saturn
and Jupiter.

These two have been dancing closely with one another this year but will meet finally at 0 degrees of Aquarius, visible for just a few hours after sundown. The "Great Conjunction" represents the blending of two great powers, the societal planets, Jupiter and Saturn, that influence us all. These slow moving planets are the farthest planets in our solar system that are still visible to the naked eye. They meet in conjunction, (on the same degree and sign) every 19-20 years.

This particular Great Conjunction is extra special because it falls on the Winter Solstice which has not happened since the 17th century and it is close enough to the Earth to see it. It is thought that the great conjunction of 7BC was the Star of Bethlehem that inspired the Christmas Story, the star the Magi followed to meet the saviour, the birth of light. That conjunction was in the constellation of Pisces and thus ushered in the Age of Pisces (the fish) through the Pisces / Virgo axis with the divine being represented through the projection of holiness onto certain exalted individual(s) delivered by the virginal (virgo) maiden. We have seen through Christianity and other religions prophets, saviours, martyrs and messiahs that represented the chosen path to God. This is the Neptunian Pisces story of what god represented through the Pisces / Virgo archetypal lens.

This conjunction on the Winter Solstice resides in Aquarius and some believe that it represents us truly entering the Age of Aquarius. We have seen throughout the year the change stirred within our communities, the unrest and uproar, rebellion and causes over various topics. This has been escalated as Saturn entered Aquarius back in the early spring of 2020 before retrograding in July back into Capricorn. Now it is here in Aquarius to stay and lit up by Jupiter for the moment they blend together. Saturn will remain in Aquarius for 2.5 years.

Aquarius is the people, equality, humanity, the group, friends, forward development, and the energy that surrounds genius and innovation. We learn from the past in Aquarius and fearlessly move towards the future together. The divine is expressed through us all in the sign of Aquarius, in equality and individual growth, and through the ability to ascend together through the mind, in our understanding of social improvement, personal development and collective forward movement towards ideals. Aquarius is rational and grounded, a fixed air sign, ruled by Saturn and also by Uranus. Aquarius learns from the past and pushes society forward towards improved societal structures that are fair and involve the entire herd.

These two planets Jupiter, which represents awareness, expansion and growth and Saturn, structure, efforts, foundations and responsibility are together ushering in change and innovation on a societal level. Together they represent trust in what is evident. Trust in what we can see by looking deeper into the past and moving forward out of our history, out of our karma, and out of what limits us collectively and personally. Moving out, shining a light, and expanding into where we can build foundation is Jupiter and Saturn coming together. It is the awareness of responsibility for oneself. It is the awareness of the mind, the super ego of informed Jupiter and how you secure your future through effort and building, Saturn.

How this affects us personally will depends where Aquarius sits in your natal chart. Those it affect the most will have planets close in orb to 0 degrees in Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio and Taurus.
